Foraging and Wild Edible Classes at Georgia Bushcraft
There's a special freedom that comes from foraging your own food and medicine in the wilderness. What seems like a highly specialized skillset in the current day was common knowledge just a few decades ago. While you can learn plenty from books, the best and safest way to be introduced to the world of wild foods and medicine is with hands on training from a reputable source. Fortunately, the Georgia Bushcraft Fall Gathering brings together some of the most knowledgeable bushcrafters, survivalists, and homesteaders in the country for a weekend of learning, skill sharing, and fellowship.
Foraging and Wild Medicine Classes at Georgia Bushcraft
If you're looking to up your foraging skills, or you're starting from square one, there will be something in the foraging and wild food-focused classes at Georgia Bushcraft. Here's a quick preview of what you can expect.
Join primitive skills expert Frankie Lackey on a Plant Walk, where he will guide the group through the GABC property and illustrate the wide variety of plants that are available to us, even when you least expect them. And, if you can't make Frankie's walk, you'll have another chance with Mark Merriwether during his 90-minute session Useful Trees, Vines, Bushes, and Weeds of Georgia. This hands-on session will leave you with a newfound knowledge of the multitude of edible and medicinal flora and fungi found in Georgia.
Speaking of fungi, we're excited to welcome Hunter Pruett back to the property. He's an expert in all things mushroom, and his course Fungi Fundamentals: Mysterious World of Mushrooms isn't to be missed. This class will delve into the essentials you need to know to cultivate your own mushrooms in your local forest. And if you're looking to get into mushroom foraging, you can continue to polish up on the basics in Anne-Marie Bilella's classes Anatomy of a Mushroom - How to Identify Wild Mushrooms.
Our classes don't just focus on the tiny fungi and small plants that you find along the way. Craig Caudill's class Tree ID for Bushcraft will help you learn how to identify any tree in the world using a dichotomous key and mobile phone apps. This class also takes a deep dive into forest ecology, where you'll learn how to pinpoint the perfect spots for sourcing bushcraft materials.
And the classes at Georgia Bushcraft go just beyond identification. Suzanne Shires will lead sessions on Fermenting Wild Foods and Tincture Making to allow you to apply the knowledge you've gained in the other classes and to start integrating wild foods and medicines into your day to day life.
Of course, we can't leave out some of the other courses that foraging adajcent, like Carleigh Fairchild's always popular Harvest Basket Making class. This four hour long class will walk you through the process of weaving a basket that's great for harvesting, foraging, or even the local market.
